Suspect confesses to starting fires in U.S.; reportedly planned attack for two weeks

A suspect arrested for allegedly starting wildfires in the northwestern United States has confessed to meticulously planning the attacks over a two-week period. Aaron Farinacci, 37, was apprehended near Spokane, Washington, where three destructive fires erupted over the weekend.

According to police interrogation documents, Farinacci expressed a fascination with fire, stating that "things that go through flames experience a kind of rebirth." He admitted to planning his actions for "approximately two weeks" before setting the fires. Court records indicate he had previously served nearly 10 years in prison for killing his father and was released in 2020.

Farinacci reportedly chose Saturday to start the fire, knowing that strong winds, with gusts up to 80 km/h, would create ideal conditions. He confessed to investigators that he did not anticipate the blaze becoming as widespread as it did. The suspect is believed to be responsible for starting 25 fires in the vicinity of his residence since July 4, 2025. His bail was increased from $1 million to $2 million during a court appearance where he appeared in a yellow inmate uniform. His defense team has requested a mental health evaluation.
