Suspect detained for open-air burning incident in Quito

Quito's emergency services were mobilized on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, to address two separate fire-related incidents, including an open-air burning event in the Monjas sector. Firefighters successfully contained the flames and prevented them from spreading to adjacent areas.

Following a citizen report and inter-agency coordination, National Police officers apprehended an individual believed to be responsible for starting the fire in the southeastern part of the city. The suspect has been handed over to the Prosecutor General's State for legal proceedings.

In a separate incident, emergency responders also attended to a column of smoke near the Bicentennial Park in northern Quito around 2:00 PM. Fire personnel worked to control and extinguish this fire, averting significant damage to the area.

Authorities have reiterated the dangers associated with burning trash or dry vegetation, emphasizing that such activities can quickly escalate, posing a direct threat to lives, homes, and the natural environment. They urged the public to refrain from conducting any such burns under any circumstances and to report any sightings of smoke or fire immediately to the Integrated Security Service 911.
