Suspect in Berlin attack avoids jail as prosecutors appeal sentence

A suspect convicted in May for a terrorism offense, Abdul B., has not yet begun serving his sentence because prosecutors are appealing the court's decision. The appeal seeks a longer prison term than the two years and 10 months initially handed down.

According to German media reports, Abdul B., who is a German citizen, was apprehended in Lebanon and handed over to German authorities. Following his conviction, he was reportedly monitored by the police, and his phone conversations were intercepted. German media outlets Süddeutsche Zeitung, NDR, and WDR reported that Abdul B. intended to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State (IS).

These reports indicate that Abdul B. was arrested in late 2025 at Berlin Brandenburg Airport upon his return from Lebanon. He was subsequently held in pre-trial detention until May 2026 on suspicion of planning a terrorist act. The investigation suggests he rented the car used in the attack.

The incident in question occurred during the LGBT+ community festival "Christopher Street Day" in Berlin. A car plowed into a crowd in Tiergarten park on Saturday evening, resulting in at least one fatality and injuring 16 others, according to police and fire services. A large police presence continues to search for the suspect involved in the attack.
