Suspect Kim Sang-soo identified in revenge killing of ex-girlfriend

South Korean police have publicly identified Kim Sang-soo, 52, as the suspect in the revenge killing of his former girlfriend, releasing his personal information for a month starting August 25. The decision follows an internal committee review, though Kim's objection had initially delayed the disclosure.

Kim is accused of fatally stabbing his ex-girlfriend, identified as Ms. K, in her 60s, on a street in Seongnam city in the early hours of July 5. The attack reportedly involved a weapon he had acquired in preparation for the crime.

According to police, Ms. K had filed a stalking complaint against Kim on June 10 after he persistently contacted her following their breakup. The police forwarded the case to prosecutors on June 24, leading to a summary indictment on June 30. Investigators believe Kim harbored resentment over this legal action and planned the murder as retaliation.

Authorities have charged Kim with revenge killing, a more severe offense than standard homicide, due to the perceived motive. The National Police Agency in Southern Gyeonggi Province stated that Kim's name, age, and facial photograph will be published on their website during the designated period. The information will be removed upon the expiration of the disclosure period.
