Suspected killer of footballer Mario Pineida arrested in Venezuela

An international manhunt has concluded with the arrest of Yohervy Javier M. S., a Venezuelan national apprehended in the state of Carabobo, Venezuela. Interpol had issued a red notice for the suspect, who is wanted by Ecuadorian justice for his alleged role as the principal perpetrator in the murder of Ecuadorian footballer Mario Pineida and his partner, Guisella Fernández. The suspect had been evading authorities since February 2026.

The arrest has reignited the judicial process for the double homicide, which occurred on December 17, 2025, in the Samanes 4 sector of Guayaquil. Ecuadorian prosecutors attribute a pivotal role to the detained individual, asserting that he was instrumental in orchestrating the attack. Investigations suggest he coordinated and authorized financial transfers intended to fund the execution of Pineida and Fernández.

Among the financial operations under scrutiny is a $3,000 transfer, which prosecutors believe is linked to the execution of the crime. The Ecuadorian justice system had already indicted three individuals in April 2026 for this case. However, Yohervy Javier M. S. failed to appear for trial, having violated earlier precautionary measures. His subsequent flight suspended the proceedings until his capture.

With Yohervy Javier M. S. now in custody, Ecuadorian authorities are preparing to initiate extradition proceedings. This process, involving the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Court of Justice, will seek his handover from Venezuela to face trial in Ecuador. Meanwhile, two other Venezuelan citizens, Cristian David P. G. and Jimnery Mariander P. B., remain in pre-trial detention. Cristian David P. G. is accused of alerting the perpetrators to Pineida and Fernández's presence, while Jimnery Mariander P. B. allegedly provided a bank account used for financial transactions related to the crime.
