Suspected vandal dies cutting high-tension cable in Jigawa

A suspected vandal has died after being electrocuted while allegedly attempting to cut a high-tension cable along the Ringim-Sintilimawa Road in Jigawa State. The incident occurred weeks after a similar event where suspected vandals reportedly stole 12 meters of armored cable from a school transformer, causing a power outage.

That on 31/07/2026 at about 0900hrs, a distress call was received that a body was seen lying motionless along Ringim to Sintilimawa Road.

Confirming the electrocution, the Jigawa State Police Command stated that officers responded to a distress call reporting a motionless body. Upon arrival, they observed severe burn injuries on the victim's hands, chest, and pelvic area. Items believed to be associated with the act, including hand gloves, a hacksaw, and sacks, were discovered at the scene.

It was observed that there were burns on both hands, the chest, and the pelvic area of the body.

Preliminary findings suggest the deceased was electrocuted during an attempt to vandalize the electric cable. The body was transported to a hospital, where a medical doctor confirmed the death. Efforts are currently underway to identify the deceased.

It is suspected the person was electrocuted while trying to vandalise the electric cable.

The police command has issued a stern warning to residents, urging them to refrain from tampering with electrical installations and to report any suspicious activities. The command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public assets and prosecuting individuals involved in such criminal acts.
