Suspected vandal dies under collapsed transmission tower in Nigeria

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) reported the discovery of a suspected vandal's body beneath a collapsed transmission tower in Delta State. The incident came to light during an intensive line patrol conducted by the TCN's Delta Sub-Region Lines Maintenance Department.

The fight against the vandalism of power infrastructure is one that must be inclusive. All hands must be on deck for this fight to be won.

The patrol was initiated after the 330-kilovolt (kV) Ughelli-Benin transmission line tripped off due to an earth fault. TCN linemen traced the fault to Tower 101, which had collapsed. Upon reaching the site, they found the corpse of the suspected vandal crushed between the tower's structural members.

Further inspection revealed that Tower 101 on an adjacent Ughelli–Sapele 330kV transmission line had also been severely vandalized, though it remained standing. The TCN used the discovery to condemn the ongoing vandalism of its infrastructure.

This incident is a tragic reminder of the extreme dangers of tampering with power infrastructure. Vandalism not only leads to power outages and damage to national assets, but it also endangers lives.

The company appealed to host communities and the general public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities near power installations to security agencies or TCN offices. "The fight against the vandalism of power infrastructure is one that must be inclusive. All hands must be on deck for this fight to be won," the TCN stated, emphasizing the dangers and consequences of tampering with power infrastructure, which include power outages, damage to national assets, and endangered lives.
