Suspects in Doctor's Murder Killed in Alleged Police Shootout

Three suspects apprehended in connection with the murder of a young doctor during a robbery near Karachi's Teen Talwar were killed in an exchange of fire on Thursday, according to claims by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU).

The SIU stated that a raid was conducted in Ahmed Brohi Goth, near the Northern Bypass Toll Plaza, to apprehend accomplices of the arrested suspects. Police allege that when the suspects were taken to the location to identify their associates, the accomplices opened fire on the law enforcement team.

During the alleged exchange of fire, the police claim that the three suspects and one police official sustained injuries. The injured were transported to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), but the three suspects reportedly succumbed to their injuries en route, as per police accounts.

Dr. Akash Kumar, a house officer at JPMC, was killed on July 13 after robbers intercepted his vehicle, stealing approximately Rs2 million he had withdrawn from a bank. His death triggered widespread condemnation from the medical community, with doctors protesting and the Pakistan Medical Association citing the incident as evidence of Karachi's declining law and order. Police had previously obtained a seven-day physical remand of the three suspects, who reportedly confessed to their involvement during initial interrogations.
