Suspicious object on Bavarian railway tracks prompts building evacuations

German authorities initiated a precautionary evacuation of buildings in the Bavarian town of Treuchtlingen after a suspicious object was discovered on railway lines. Special police units were dispatched to the scene to investigate the item, which authorities fear could be an explosive device.

The Bavarian police announced via X (formerly Twitter) that the evacuation was a preventative measure. A police spokesperson stated that two to three homes were temporarily cleared to allow special forces to operate safely. The suspicious object was found by a technician at the entrance to the Treuchtlingen train station.

An explosives disposal team from the federal police arrived to determine if the object poses a real threat. Authorities conducted an X-ray examination, but the analysis of the images is ongoing. The Middle Franconia Police Directorate noted that suspicions of an explosive device have not been ruled out and further checks by special forces are required.

As a result of the ongoing investigation, the area remains cordoned off, and authorities cannot yet estimate when road and rail traffic will be restored. Police have urged the public to avoid the area. Deutsche Bahn reported that several train services are affected by the complete suspension of rail traffic. Treuchtlingen has a population of approximately 13,000 and is located between Nuremberg and Ingolstadt.
