Some reviews, including one from The Guardian, suggest that the film's familiar plot structure and its resemblance to Pixar's hit "Hoppers" have limited its critical acclaim. Both films explore themes of characters temporarily inhabiting different bodies in a forest setting and learning interspecies communication amidst environmental threats.

The comparison to "Hoppers" is particularly notable, as both films share a similar premise. "Swapped," which was in development since 2018, is described as having less depth and offering fewer insights than "Hoppers," potentially appealing most to younger, more forgiving viewers. The film's narrative centers on Olly, a curious and inventive pookoo (an otter-like creature), and a proud bird, who magically swap bodies and embark on an adventure in a world populated by unusual creatures rather than familiar Earth animals.
