Sweden and Brazil Deepen Defense Ties with Gripen Jet Deal Intent

Sweden and Brazil have signed a letter of intent to strengthen their defense partnership, a move that includes Brazil's expressed interest in acquiring 20 new Gripen E/F fighter jets. The agreement was formalized in Stockholm on June 4 by the defense ministers of both nations, Pål Jonson of Sweden and José Múcio of Brazil.

This new understanding deepens the existing defense ties, which began in 2013 with Brazil's acquisition of 36 Gripen fighter jets. The initial deal also involved establishing production capabilities in South America for the Latin American market. Minister Jonson noted Brazil's clear intention to purchase the latest series of Gripen jets, though he deferred specifying the financial details, stating they are still under discussion between Brazil and the Swedish manufacturer, Saab.

The joint declaration signed by the ministers establishes a new framework for technical and scientific cooperation, including the creation of an innovation center focused on developing and exploring new systems and equipment for the Gripen jets.

Minister Jonson also marked the occasion by referencing the 200-year anniversary of diplomatic relations between Sweden and Brazil, emphasizing how their relationship has evolved into a dynamic collaboration spanning trade, innovation, sustainable development, and defense. This agreement signifies a continued commitment to mutual growth and technological advancement in the defense sector.
