Sweden deploys fighter jets, warships to Finland amid security concerns

Sweden is sending fighter jets and a corvette warship to Finland to enhance air surveillance and protection, responding to a request from Helsinki amid growing concerns about the Russia-Ukraine war's impact on regional security. The Swedish military's contribution will continue until the end of 2026.

Finland's defense forces stated that the Swedish equipment will strengthen air surveillance, freeing up Finnish resources to respond to potential violations or incidents. This deployment underscores the close bilateral defense cooperation between the two neighboring countries, both of whom recently joined NATO. Finland shares a 1,340-kilometer border with Russia.

The Swedish equipment strengthens air surveillance in particular, releasing the Finnish Defense Forces' own resources for repelling violations and incidents, if need be.

Sweden's Defence Minister Pal Jonson explained that the decision was made due to a "deteriorating security situation." Beyond fighter jets and vessels equipped with drone combat capabilities, Sweden may also provide ground-based anti-drone systems. This move comes as military drones have strayed into the airspace of Finland and other Baltic nations, fueling fears that the conflict in Ukraine is extending towards NATO's northern borders.

These incursions have heightened security warnings in neighboring countries, particularly as Ukraine increases attacks on Russian Baltic Sea oil shipping ports. Separately, Sweden's defense company SAAB announced it had secured a 1.2 billion crown order from Finland for its RBS 70 NG portable air defense missile system.
