Sweden to bolster Finnish air defense with fighter jets and warships

Sweden is deploying fighter jets and warships to Finland to bolster its neighbor's air defenses, a move announced Friday by the Swedish government. The deployment is part of an "enhanced defense cooperation" aimed at strengthening Finland's ability to counter drone threats and secure its airspace.

Defense Minister Pål Jonson stated that the decision, made in early July following a Finnish request, allows the Swedish Armed Forces to operate Gripen fighter jets, naval forces, and sensors in support of Finland. He emphasized that the security situation in the Baltic Sea region has worsened over the past six months, citing an increase in drone intrusions and other hybrid operations by Russia.

The government made a decision in early July, linked to a request from Finland to strengthen Finnish air defense, primarily against drones.

"Europe is currently at a high tension level due to Russia's actions," Jonson said. He noted that Russia's armed forces are largely tied up in and around Ukraine, but warned of an increasing number of hybrid operations across Europe. Sweden is taking measures to deter and complicate these operations, which sometimes involve contracted third parties.

Based on that, we are giving the Swedish Armed Forces a mandate to conduct operations with Gripen aircraft, naval forces, and sensors to support Finland.

The Swedish deployment comes amid broader concerns about regional security. Earlier in the week, reports indicated that the head of the U.S. CIA was in Moscow for unannounced talks, reportedly warning Russia against attacking NATO countries. While official comments on intelligence matters are rare, Jonson acknowledged the deteriorating security landscape and Sweden's awareness of Russian military developments.
