Swiatek defeats Rybakina to claim Canadian Open title

Iga Swiatek captured her first title of the season, decisively defeating Elena Rybakina 6-2, 6-3 in the Canadian Open final on Thursday. This victory in Toronto serves as a crucial confidence booster for the Polish star as she prepares for the upcoming U.S. Open.

The match saw Swiatek, a six-time Grand Slam champion, dominate on the hard court. The crowd's chants of "Iga! Iga!" and the presence of Polish flags seemed to energize her throughout the contest. In contrast, Rybakina struggled with unforced errors, particularly in the first set, which featured 12 mistakes from the Kazakh player. Rybakina also failed to effectively utilize her powerful serve, managing only one ace during the entire match.

Swiatek capitalized on Rybakina's difficulties, breaking her serve twice in the opening set and again in the second set to establish a 3-2 lead. Although Rybakina managed to break back, Swiatek closed out the final three games with strong play, securing the championship point with a clean strike. Fatigue may have been a factor for Rybakina, who had played three hours more than Swiatek in the tournament leading up to the final, with her previous three matches all going to three sets.

With this Canadian title, world number eight Swiatek is set to return to the top five in the WTA rankings, underscoring her return to peak form.
