Swiss bar fire: Lawyers seek murder charges against owners

Lawyers representing victims of a deadly fire at a Swiss ski resort bar are pushing for more serious charges against the French owners. They want the couple, Jacques and Jessica Moretti, to be charged with "potential murder" instead of "negligent homicide."

This push comes after the revelation of WhatsApp messages from 2019. These messages, reportedly sent by Jessica Moretti, indicate an awareness of the fire risk if "fountain" candles came into contact with the bar's furnishings, carpet, or soundproofing foam. Investigators believe sparks from these candles ignited the blaze on New Year's Eve.

According to one of the lawyers, Sophie Haenni, the messages demonstrate that the Morettis "knew the bar could catch fire." She stated that they "were aware of the risk and they accepted it." The upgraded charge of "potential murder" under Swiss law carries a potential life sentence, significantly more severe than negligent homicide.

The fire at the "Le Constellation" bar in Crans-Montana resulted in 41 deaths and 115 injuries, affecting numerous foreign nationals. The legal proceedings are ongoing, with 14 individuals currently under investigation.
