Swiss Federal Council rejects nutrition initiative as too ambitious, too fast

Swiss Federal President Guy Parmelin has stated that the government rejects the nutrition initiative, arguing that its aims are too broad and its proposed timeline for implementation is unrealistic. Parmelin, who also serves as the Minister of Agriculture, explained that while the initiative addresses important concerns, its proposed changes are "extremely difficult to impossible" to enact.

The initiative calls for a fundamental transformation of Swiss agriculture, pushing farmers to produce more plant-based foods and fewer animal products on the same amount of land. The goal is to boost the country's self-sufficiency rate from 50% to 70% within a decade, a move proponents argue would be crucial during times of crisis. The plan also mandates that the federal government implement supportive funding measures.

This initiative is backed by a group led by environmental activist Franziska Herren, who previously spearheaded a similar but ultimately unsuccessful water initiative. The nutrition initiative faces widespread opposition, with both chambers of parliament unanimously rejecting it. No political party has endorsed the proposal, and a counter-proposal also failed to gain traction.

The campaign against the initiative mirrors tactics used in the previous water initiative. The Swiss Farmers' Union is actively campaigning against it, using slogans like "forced veganism" and warning of government-imposed meal plans. A diverse committee, including figures from across the political spectrum, is also using social media to share images of traditional Swiss foods like cheese fondue and Älplermagronen, accompanied by phrases such as "everything is dull without cheese."
