Sydney dogs to be euthanized after fatal attack, council worker injured

Five dogs are set to be euthanized following a fatal attack on a 23-year-old man at a property in Eschol Park, south-west Sydney. The man's body was discovered on Wednesday at the site, informally known as "Saturn's Rings," with police stating he suffered injuries consistent with an animal attack.

Campbelltown City Council rangers and investigators attended the rural property on Friday and secured five dogs, transporting them to an animal shelter for euthanasia. During the operation, a 53-year-old council worker sustained a minor hand injury. Police are actively investigating whether the deceased man was an intruder at the property, as he did not appear to be a resident.

Campbelltown Mayor Darcy Lound expressed the community's shock and offered condolences to the man's family. Under New South Wales law, dog owners may have certain protections if their dog attacks a trespasser or is provoked. However, other liabilities can still apply, and dangerous, menacing, or restricted dogs can be seized and destroyed.

At the scene, a 53-year-old man was treated for a minor hand injury. The dogs were taken to the animal shelter to be euthanised.

The property itself, built by Polish immigrant Stefan Dzwonnik in 1979, has a unique history and architectural design, inspired by the planet Saturn. It was once planned to be a "mecca for a world-wide movement directed toward a better life on Earth" and was known as the Universal Power House before becoming commonly referred to as Saturn's Rings due to its concentric ring design. Efforts are underway to contact the current owner of the property.
