SYECO declares an indefinite strike by public-sector teachers in Moba

Public-sector teachers belonging to the Congo Teachers’ Union in Moba, Tanganyika, have been ordered to stay home from Monday, September 7, in an indefinite strike over what the union describes as the government’s failure to address their demands.

The decision came during an extraordinary general assembly held over the weekend. SYECO/Moba is demanding better salary and social conditions, including support for retired teachers, medical coverage, and an adjustment of teachers’ salaries to as much as $500.

The union is also calling for government support for newly recruited teachers, referred to as “NU,” which it says requires urgent intervention. Placide Muyumba, the union’s permanent secretary in Moba, told members to remain at home until the government responds.

“All SYECO member teachers, as of this Monday, must stay at home until the government is able to respond to our demands,” Muyumba said. He also called for retired teachers to be supported and questioned deductions intended for the National Social Security Fund for Public Agents, known as CNSSAP.

SYECO/Moba said the strike would continue until its demands are met. Radio Okapi said attempts to obtain a reaction from national education authorities in Kalemie did not succeed.
