Symi alert: Search for five missing from sailboat underway

An extensive search and rescue operation is underway in the maritime area between the Greek island of Symi and the rocky islet of Seskli. The operation was launched after a sailboat was discovered drifting without a crew.

Reports indicate that eight German tourists were aboard the vessel. They reportedly entered the water to swim, but strong winds in the area caused the sailboat to drift away around 8 p.m. on Sunday. Two of the tourists managed to reach the shore on their own. Approximately four hours later, a woman also made it to safety.

For the remaining five missing individuals, significant search efforts are being coordinated by the Hellenic Coast Guard's Joint Rescue Coordination Centre. The operation involves two Coast Guard vessels, an offshore patrol ship, and a Super Puma helicopter from the Hellenic Air Force. Searches are continuing despite prevailing weather conditions, with winds blowing from the west at 4 to 5 Beaufort.
