Syria's Kurdish-led SDF dissolves as part of integration with Damascus

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a key player in Syria's conflict that fought the Islamic State with U.S. backing, announced its dissolution as an independent military force. The move marks a significant step in the integration plan agreed upon with the Damascus government earlier this year.

SDF commander Mazloum Abdi stated in a televised speech, "We announce today the end of the mission of the Syrian Democratic Forces and announce with full responsibility its dissolution as an independent military force." This announcement follows an agreement with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa after the phased integration of SDF forces into the national army.

The integration deal, described by Washington as a "historic milestone," came after Syrian government forces launched a significant offensive in January, reclaiming areas previously held by the SDF. The Kurdish People's Protection Units, which formed the core of the SDF, have already begun integrating into state forces, with its commander appointed as deputy defense minister for eastern territories.

This dissolution occurs as the new leadership in Damascus seeks to consolidate control and rebuild Syria after years of civil war and international isolation. The integration aims to resolve internal strife and present a unified front, with support from Washington, as the country navigates its post-conflict recovery.
