Syrian Democratic Forces commander lands in Damascus for national unification talks - report

Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) commander Mazloum Abdi arrived in Damascus on August 25 for crucial talks aimed at finalizing the integration of SDF-controlled areas into Syria's national security forces. This development follows the US rescinding sanctions on Syria and reports of Syrian and Israeli officials meeting in Amman, indicating a complex geopolitical landscape.

The integration process, which began six months prior, has been fraught with apprehension among Kurds and other groups within SDF-controlled territories. Fears of Damascus forcibly conquering eastern Syria, rather than pursuing a power-sharing agreement, were prevalent. The SDF, rooted in Kurdish leftist ideology and with significant female participation, contrasts sharply with the Damascus leadership, which has ties to conservative Islamic movements like Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly linked to al-Qaeda.

Sources indicate that education was a primary topic during Abdi's meetings with Syrian government officials, held under a media blackout. These discussions are part of an effort to complete integration measures by the end of August, following a previous meeting with President Ahmed al-Sharaa that reportedly did not resolve all disputed issues. Abdi recently stated that the military, security, and administrative integration phases were largely complete, marking the beginning of a new phase for the SDF and Damascus.
