Syria Says Ending Weapons Outside State Control Key to Regional Stability; Turkey Agrees

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani declared that Damascus is committed to eliminating weapons outside state control, asserting that dismantling armed formations operating outside the legal framework is essential for Syria's stability and regional security. Speaking alongside Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Ankara, Shaibani highlighted close counterterrorism cooperation between Syria and Turkey as a cornerstone of their partnership.

Shaibani stated that Syria's efforts to extend state authority and control illegitimate arms are reflected in ongoing dialogue and legal agreements aimed at unifying institutions. He specifically referenced the deal to integrate the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) into state structures. "A unified Syria free of terrorism and armed militias is the best wall protecting our shared borders," Shaibani asserted, noting Damascus' coordination with Ankara to ensure this process serves their mutual national interests.

Fidan affirmed that Turkey and Syria would deepen their cooperation in counterterrorism, defense, and security, stressing the importance of uninterrupted progress in Syria's integration process. "Integrating all armed elements, so-called organizations and militias under a central, legitimate national structure is essential for Syria’s unity and our region’s stability," Fidan stated. He added that Syria's role in regional stability, even during the war in Iran, makes protecting its security a shared responsibility for regional countries.

Fidan also condemned Israeli attacks on Syrian sovereignty, labeling them a significant threat to the country's stability. He criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's stance, suggesting it indicated a lack of desire for peace despite understandings over a Gaza agreement. Fidan urged the international community to respond more forcefully to Israel's "occupation mentality" and to enforce the 1974 Disengagement Agreement while respecting Syrian sovereignty. Discussions also included Palestine and Lebanon, with Fidan welcoming steps toward normalizing Syrian-Lebanese relations and expressing concern over Israel's actions in Lebanon.
