Syrian Interim President Pursues Security Deal with Israel, Cites U.S.-Supervised Channel

Syrian interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa revealed that his government is actively working towards a security agreement with Israel, with several other countries involved in the process. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Sharaa expressed hope that such an accord could lead to comprehensive peace, emphasizing Syria's commitment to avoiding any confrontations with Israel. This diplomatic push follows the establishment of a communication channel between Syria and Israel in January 2026, facilitated by the United States. This channel is intended to coordinate intelligence, security, and trade matters, as well as to resolve disputes and prevent misunderstandings.

Discussions regarding a security agreement were confirmed by both sides in September of the previous year. The core issue involves regulating the presence of Syrian and Israeli forces and security personnel in the border region. Since the ousting of former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad in late 2024, Israel's military has significantly increased its operations in southern Syria. Israeli troops have been deployed into a UN-controlled demilitarized buffer zone situated between the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and Syria.

Israel's military frequently conducts strikes within Syria, which it states are aimed at destroying weapons depots or military equipment and preventing potential attacks by hostile extremists. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, during a visit to Syria over the weekend, described the developments in the Golan Heights region as "absolutely unacceptable." He reminded the international community that the Golan Heights are Syrian sovereign territory.
