Syros rescuer's body to undergo toxicology tests after stabbing death

Toxicological tests have been ordered for the body of a 42-year-old rescuer who died on the Greek island of Syros after being stabbed. The investigation is focusing on whether the fatal wound occurred inside or outside the home, a detail that could significantly impact the case's progression.

Eyewitnesses reported that the rescuer appeared to be in a state of extreme agitation moments before her death. One witness, a Greek national, described seeing a 41-year-old man attempting to immobilize a person wielding a large knife. The agitated individual, later identified as a woman, reportedly resisted intensely. "The woman said nothing at all during the entire incident, only showing that she was agitated, as if she had used something," the witness stated. "Only at the end, before completely losing consciousness, did she say 'Syg...', and then she didn't react at all."

Another witness, a Swiss national, recounted seeing a man on top of a woman lying on the stairs, immobilizing her. He told the man to be careful with the woman, as he suspected she might be a drug user. The accused, who knew the victim from childhood on the island, was reportedly surprised to discover the attacker was a woman. According to a witness, the rescuer attempted to apologize to the man before she died.

The accused, through his lawyers, stated that he was attacked with a knife inside his home by a person with covered features. He claimed to be trapped in a small space with no way to escape or defend himself and his wife. He pursued the individual outside the house to disarm them, identify them, and call authorities and the ambulance service.

A disagreement between the investigating judge and the prosecutor regarding the 41-year-old's pre-trial detention led to a reversal. The accused remains under house arrest pending a decision from the Syros Council of Misdemeanors Judges, while his wife was released under restrictive conditions. Authorities are concentrating on the critical question of where the fatal blow was inflicted: inside the home, as the defense claims, or outside, where she ultimately collapsed. The victim's family is demanding justice.
