Tadej Pogacar Withdraws from Vuelta a España After Serious Crash

Tadej Pogacar's dominant performance in the Vuelta a España came to an abrupt end Saturday after a serious crash on the eighth stage forced him to withdraw from the race. The Slovenian cyclist, who was leading the general classification, fell heavily about 30 kilometers from the finish line on a flat, straight section of the course.

The world champion hit the asphalt headfirst, sustaining injuries to his left shoulder and face. Despite attempts to remount his bike with visible wounds, Pogacar received immediate medical attention and was transported away by ambulance. His exit from the race marks a significant turn of events for the Grand Tour.

Pogacar had been in exceptional form, building on a season of numerous victories, including his fifth Tour de France title in July. He was aiming to secure his first Vuelta a España victory in his second participation. Before the crash, he held a commanding lead of nearly four minutes over his closest competitor, Enric Mas.

With Pogacar out, Enric Mas is expected to start Sunday's final stage of the first race week as the new overall leader. The withdrawal reshapes the competition, opening the door for other contenders. Felix Gall, now in third place, trails Mas by just over a minute, while Primoz Roglic is also in contention.
