Taichung MRT Green Line Extension to Fengyuan Station, Fengke Axis Included in Planning

Taichung City's MRT Green Line is set for an extension deeper into Fengyuan District, a move aimed at enhancing public transportation and fostering balanced development in northern Taichung and its mountainous areas. The Taichung City Government's Mass Rapid Transit Bureau is currently studying the feasibility of the 'Chongde-Fengyuan Line.' This extension plans to incorporate Fengyuan Station and parts of the Fengke axis, which were originally considered for later phases of the network. The Green Line's extension to Fengyuan Station is expected to add two new stations. This integration will significantly improve transfer convenience with the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) Fengyuan Station. It also preserves flexibility for future integration with the Fengke axis, thereby boosting the overall efficiency of the MRT network. The bureau emphasizes that this extension is more than just a transport project for the city center; it serves as a vital public transport corridor connecting northern districts, including Beitun, Tanzi, Shengang, and Fengyuan. During the feasibility study, the bureau is examining not only engineering viability and transportation demand but also crucial local concerns like the connection to Fengyuan Station, service to the city center, and future transfer integration with the Fengke axis. The current plan envisions the Chongde-Fengyuan Line extending from the intersection of Chongde Road and Sanmin Road, following Chongde Road, Chengde Road, Fengyuan Boulevard Section 1, and Zhongzheng Road, terminating near the intersection of Fengyuan Boulevard and Zhongzheng Road. The Fengke axis, originally planned for later development, aims to serve Fengyuan, Shengang, Daya, and the Central Taiwan Science Park. The bureau highlighted that Fengyuan Station's surrounding area is densely populated with active commercial activity and serves as a hub for TRA, bus transfers, and daily life services. Therefore, extending the Green Line to connect with it is a strategic move. The MRT project remains in the feasibility study phase, with subsequent evaluations focusing on engineering technology, land conditions, construction impact, financial viability, and central government review before proceeding.
