Taichung Sends Large Mobile Pumps to Flooded Keelung

Taichung has sent three large mobile pumps and support personnel to flood-hit Keelung after heavy rain caused flooding at 60 locations.

Keelung recorded more than 70 millimeters of rain in one hour. Homes and basements were inundated, and additional pumps helped complete drainage work at flooded basements by Wednesday night, reducing the impact on local vendors and residents.

Taichung’s Water Resources Bureau reviewed its flood-control equipment and response capacity after learning that Keelung needed assistance. The pumps and personnel arrived at Keelung City Hall at 10:30 a.m.

Officials plan to position the equipment in areas considered vulnerable to further flooding, including Renyi Road Lane 303, Maijin Road and the No. 4 pumping station. Keelung Mayor George Hsieh thanked Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen and the Taichung government for quickly sending equipment and workers.

Hsieh said cooperation between cities was important as extreme weather created new challenges. Keelung officials are preparing for the possibility of more heavy rain in the coming days.
