Taichung YouBike Network Expands, Reaching 1,800 Stations and 88% Village Coverage

Taichung City's popular YouBike public bicycle system has achieved a significant milestone, reaching 1,800 stations and covering 88% of its objective to establish a station in every village.

The city's Transportation Bureau announced that the target of 1,800 stations, originally set for the end of the year, has been met ahead of schedule. The system now boasts 13,077 YouBikes, facilitating over 134 million cumulative rides. This expansion solidifies Taichung's position as having the largest YouBike network in Taiwan.

With the first half-hour of usage free, YouBike offers a convenient short-term transportation option for residents, contributing to reduced air pollution from motorcycles. In May alone, YouBike usage surged to a record 2.19 million rides, with a single-day high of 84,919 rides on May 15, marking a significant step towards Taichung's low-carbon city goals.

The service's reach has extended to previously underserved areas. Stations have been established in the Guguan and Songhe tribes within the mountainous Heping District, ensuring public bicycle access across the city's diverse urban, suburban, and rural areas. The network spans from the easternmost station in Guguan to the westernmost in Longjing District, the southernmost in Wuri District, and the northernmost in Dajia District.

While the goal of having a YouBike station in every village is nearing completion, Transportation Bureau Director Ye Zhaofu acknowledged that some remote villages may not yet show high usage. However, he affirmed that station installations will continue, with the expectation that these less-served areas will eventually benefit from increased accessibility.
