Taiwan weather: Less moisture, more thunderstorms expected as tropical depression may form

Taiwan's weather is set to become drier as high pressure gradually strengthens over the coming week, reducing atmospheric moisture. The Central Weather Administration forecasts that a weak southwest wind will still influence the island tomorrow, potentially bringing localized afternoon thunderstorms to western areas and mountains. Greater Taipei should be particularly aware of the possibility of heavy rain.

From Wednesday to Friday, a southwesterly to southerly wind will prevail. Lingering scattered short-term showers are expected in the windward southern regions. Afternoon thunderstorms may occur in western areas and mountains, with the scope of heavy afternoon rain shrinking to mainly mountainous areas.

Looking towards the weekend and early next week, most of Taiwan is expected to experience partly cloudy to sunny skies. However, eastern areas and the Hengchun Peninsula might see isolated brief showers. Afternoon thunderstorms could still occur in areas south of Hsinchu and in mountainous regions. Temperatures are predicted to range between 32 and 35 degrees Celsius during the day throughout the week. Southeastern areas should watch for potential Föhn winds, while the Greater Taipei Basin, near-mountain areas in central and southern Taiwan, and the Hualien-Taitung valley could experience localized highs exceeding 36 degrees Celsius.

Forecasters are also monitoring a tropical cloud system developing southeast of the Philippines. This disturbance shows a trend of significant development around Friday, with a possibility of forming into a tropical depression over the weekend as it moves southward over the Philippine Sea. Continued observation is necessary.
