Tainan Canal centenary celebrated with exhibition of artist Dong Ri-fu's works

To commemorate the centennial of the Tainan Canal's opening, the Da Xin Museum in Tainan, Taiwan, is hosting an art exhibition featuring the works of the late Tainan-based artist Dong Ri-fu. The exhibition, titled "Exhausting This Life - Gazing at the Tainan Canal Through Painting," presents over 50 pieces, including oil paintings, pastels, and sketches, offering a visual journey through the canal's historical landscapes and the city's enduring memories.

Curator Zhang Bai-ling shared her experience preparing for the exhibition, expressing deep emotion. She noted that the city government and various organizations are marking the Tainan Canal's 100th anniversary with several events, and the Da Xin Museum's exhibition is a response to the Cultural Affairs Bureau's encouragement for private sector cultural initiatives. The exhibition, developed over six months, aims to provide the public with an opportunity to re-examine the canal's century-long history through the unique lens of Dong Ri-fu's artistic vision.

Zhang explained that Dong Ri-fu's depictions of the canal were more than just landscape records; they were infused with his personal life experiences and emotions. He had a particular fondness for painting boats docked or preparing to set sail on the canal. Through his fluid lines, rich colors, and skillful use of light and shadow, Dong captured the tranquil yet dynamic moments of canal life, conveying a profound affection for his hometown.

The exhibition is arranged narratively, guiding visitors from the opening pieces to Dong's final sketch and personal reflections, creating an immersive experience akin to a dialogue with the artist. A prominent display on the main wall features Dong's 2011 self-portrait, accompanied by the text "An artist should be one painting," symbolizing a life dedicated to art, shaped by diverse lines, colors, and light, ultimately expressing his inner world. The curator hopes that visitors will not only appreciate Dong's precise brushwork and color choices but also feel the emotions and life force behind each stroke.
