Tainan Explosion: 15 Injured, Firefighters Shield Commander from Blasts

A powerful explosion rocked Tainan's Annan District, leaving 15 people injured and igniting fires that spread to 11 homes, with an additional 57 properties suffering damage. The blast left a trail of destruction, with blackened buildings, shattered glass, and warped door frames filling the air with the smell of smoke. Residents described the scene as terrifying, with some comparing the impact to an earthquake or bombing.

One resident, Ms. Chen, initially thought it was a simple fire but was startled by the explosion. She found her second-floor apartment ablaze and struggled to escape due to a warped metal gate and shattered glass door. Neighbors helped her flee just as the fire intensified. She returned to find her home severely damaged, with the third-floor ceiling collapsed and belongings scattered.

Another affected couple found their home uninhabitable due to the blast and subsequent rain, which caused flooding. A new housing development near the explosion site also sustained significant damage, with windows shattered and facades scorched. The financial losses are expected to be substantial.

The incident highlighted the bravery of the local fire department. While evacuating due to the potential presence of flammable materials, Commander Qiu Yuanying fell. A team leader, Cai Biyang, and two other firefighters immediately shielded him from the blast, using their bodies and protective gear to protect him from the heat. Qiu Yuanying, who suffered only minor abrasions, emphasized the camaraderie among the firefighters, stating, "We are all family, we cannot leave our brothers behind."
