A powerful explosion rocked a construction site in Tainan's Annan District early Friday, injuring 14 people and causing significant damage to properties within 100 meters. The blast occurred around 2:46 AM as firefighters battled a blaze involving waste materials, including magnesium and aluminum, which made the fire difficult to extinguish. Residents reported hearing the explosion and experiencing its impact, with shattered glass and warped iron doors affecting homes closest to the site. One resident described the fire, which started around 1 AM, as unusual, possibly involving battery waste. Firefighters initially controlled the fire, but the situation escalated when the explosion occurred. A fire commander was reportedly shielded by a subordinate during the blast, sustaining only minor injuries. The injured, including civilians and volunteer firefighters, have been hospitalized, with no reports of life-threatening conditions.
