Tainan Pomelo Competition: Farmer Guo Jiacheng Crowned 'Pomelo King'

Tainan, Taiwan – The 11th annual Tainan Pomelo Competition has crowned local farmer Guo Jiacheng as the "Pomelo King" after a rigorous judging process. Sixty farmers vied for the top honor, presenting their best pomelos for evaluation based on flavor, appearance, and sugar content.

The competition, which had been paused for a year due to Typhoon Daanas, saw participants harvest their fruit on August 14th. After a period of aging, the fruits were presented to a panel of expert judges, including professors from Chiayi University and researchers from the Tainan District Agricultural Research and Extension Station.

The fruits entered this year have an average sugar content of over 12 degrees, with the highest reaching 15.1 degrees. The texture is chewy and the quality is excellent.

Judges noted the high average sugar content of this year's entries, exceeding 12 degrees Brix, with some reaching as high as 15.1 degrees. They praised the fruits for their firm texture, uniform shape, smooth skin, and fine oil cells. The flesh was described as delicate, juicy, aromatic, and sweet.

Agricultural Bureau Director Feng Xiangyong emphasized the competition's commitment to promoting safe, healthy, and environmentally friendly cultivation. He highlighted the stringent standards, including testing for 411 types of pesticide residues and certifications like "production and marketing traceability," "organic certification," and "Taiwan agricultural product production and traceability." Winners, he stated, represent the "boutique of the pomelo world."
