Tainan to Transform Historic Sugar Factory into Robotics Industry Hub

Tainan City is set to repurpose the historic Xinying Sugar Factory into a forward-looking center for the smart robotics industry. Mayor Huang Wei-che announced the city's plan to seek central government support and partner with private organizations, including Taiwan Sugar Corporation, to transform the 29-hectare site into an economic hub that blends historical depth with industrial dynamism.

Xinying Sugar Factory should serve as the front stage for Tainan's robotics industry, providing smart robot displays, talent education, and demonstration fields in the core urban area.

The factory will serve as a "smart robotics industry golden triangle" frontrunner, functioning as a base for system integration and talent cultivation. It will host robotics demonstrations, provide educational opportunities, and serve as a testing ground for new technologies. This initiative is designed to complement existing robotics development in the region, including mass production facilities in the Liuying Science Park and application research at the Industrial Technology Research Institute's Liujia campus.

This transformation aims to attract more talent to the northern Tainan area, bolstering the technological capabilities of the "Southern Science Corridor." The project also emphasizes preserving the sugar factory's heritage, integrating cultural assets with modern technology to create a unique narrative and public space. The introduction of smart robotics services is expected to offer new industrial content for the local community.

The Xinying Sugar Factory possesses both an Type B industrial zone designation and sugar industry assets, with a 29-hectare base located in the core area of Xinying.

Local officials highlighted the importance of the Xinying Sugar Factory's inclusion in the robotics industry cluster. The Economic Development Bureau is also working to expand industrial park areas to accommodate the growing sector. The demonstration and public service aspects of smart robotics at the factory are anticipated to encourage long-term residency of skilled workers in Xinying, enhancing the market competitiveness of "Made in Tainan" robots. The development is already impacting the local real estate market, with property values in key areas of Xinying showing a significant increase.
