Taipei bus stop's 'rust' design sparks controversy

A public art bus stop in Taipei's Wenshan District has sparked controversy just before its official opening, with critics pointing to rust-colored stains on the ground and wilting plants on its roof. The structure, "Cong Sheng Fu Yu," cost NT$4.13 million to build.

City councilors have raised concerns about the appearance of the bus stop, which features a green roof and is located near Wenshan Park. Photos shared by councilors show sparse, yellowing vegetation and significant brown marks on the pavement, which they attribute to rust.

The Department of Urban Development responded that the design incorporates "weathering steel," a material whose oxidized, aged appearance is an intentional part of the artistic concept. The department explained that the plants selected, including Pennisetum alopecuroides and Nephrolepis cordifolia, are low-maintenance and suited to the local climate. The rust-like marks are a natural result of the weathering steel oxidizing, a common practice in public art installations both domestically and internationally.

However, the department acknowledged that the current appearance might be due to ongoing construction. They have instructed the contractor to immediately clean, maintain, and improve the site. The bus stop will only be officially accepted and opened after all deficiencies are rectified, ensuring it meets safety, functionality, and quality standards.
