Taipei mayor hits back at claims over ‘toxic oil’ case: DPP is ‘besieging Chiang to save Lai’

Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an says the presidential office is using him to shift attention away from the Chung Lien Oils case. He described the move as the Democratic Progressive Party “besieging Chiang to save Lai.”

Chiang spoke before attending an event on Sept. 4, after the presidential office accused Kuomintang legislator Hsu Chiao-hsin of raising the case as a political tactic to rescue the mayor. Presidential office spokesperson Kuo Ya-hui said on social media that Hsu was inventing a story and seeking to protect Chiang, whom she described as being in danger.

Hsu said on Sept. 2 that she had received information allegedly originating inside the Justice Ministry. According to her account, senior ministry officials had discussed the toxic-oil case with a veteran media figure. She also claimed that the 20% threshold for removing products from sale may have been decided by President Lai Ching-te.

Chiang said the presidential office had not directly answered either the allegations about the oil case or Hsu’s questions. He called for a clear explanation of whether Lai had intervened and whether he had taken part in deciding the 20% removal standard. The mayor said that avoiding those questions showed the government was shifting focus rather than addressing the case.
