Taipei Mayor Proposes Cabinet Reshuffle, Endorses Kaohsiung Mayor for Premier

Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an has publicly called for a cabinet reshuffle, proposing Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chi-mai as a strong candidate to become the next premier. Chiang stated in a recent interview that the current administration and legislature are facing a deadlock, necessitating a change in leadership to move forward.

Chiang expressed admiration for Chen Chi-mai's performance as mayor, highlighting his high approval ratings and his decisive action during the "toxic oil" incident. He noted that Chen prioritized the health and safety of Kaohsiung citizens, a move Chiang found commendable and difficult to execute. "Mayor Chen Chi-mai is a suitable candidate for forming a new cabinet," Chiang asserted.

The Taipei mayor acknowledged that any potential cabinet change would depend on discussions within the Kuomintang (KMT) and Taiwan People's Party (TPP), which are the major opposition parties. However, he emphasized that regardless of the method, whether through a no-confidence vote or other means, replacing the premier could signify a new public mandate and facilitate progress in government initiatives.

Chiang believes that implementing political accountability and resolving political stalemates are crucial. He suggested that a new premier, representing a fresh popular will, could bring renewed impetus to policy implementation and governmental operations, ultimately serving the public interest more effectively.
