Taitung agricultural research develops Huang Jing cultivation techniques, doubling essential oil yield

Researchers at the Taitung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station have successfully developed innovative cultivation and essential oil extraction techniques for Huang Jing, a native Taiwanese plant. This breakthrough promises to revitalize local agriculture and create new value in the green economy by significantly increasing the plant's essential oil yield.

Huang Jing, known for its distinct natural aroma, is a common native species in Taiwan. While traditionally used by communities, it lacked a systematic approach for industrial cultivation and extraction. The research team's findings confirm that Huang Jing essential oil possesses multiple beneficial properties, including anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and mosquito-repellent effects. Extensive safety tests have also shown minimal risk of skin irritation or allergic reactions at low concentrations, making it suitable for cosmetic and household products.

The new techniques have dramatically improved efficiency. Traditional extraction methods yielded only 0.1% to 0.2% essential oil. However, by selecting superior plant varieties and implementing optimized cultivation methods like dwarfing and dense planting, the Taitung station achieved an essential oil yield of 0.58%, more than double the previous rate. This advancement not only simplifies field management but also enhances harvesting efficiency, increasing the yield of young leaves and branches by 1.45 times.

With an extraction rate now 2.6 times higher than traditional processes, the technology is being prepared for non-exclusive licensing. This move is expected to bolster the production and market competitiveness of Taiwanese Huang Jing essential oil. As consumer demand for natural, eco-friendly, and locally sourced products grows, the golden-hued Huang Jing essential oil, with its calming and soothing aroma, is well-positioned to meet market trends.
