Taiwan: 87-year-old man arrested for allegedly beating wife to death amid nagging

An 87-year-old man in Pingzhen District, Taoyuan City, Taiwan, has been detained on suspicion of fatally beating his 85-year-old wife. The incident allegedly occurred on August 7, when the elderly husband, identified by the surname Chen, reportedly used a wooden crutch and later an iron bar to assault his wife. He subsequently called the police to confess. According to reports, the man claimed he was driven to violence by his wife's persistent nagging, exacerbated by the absence of a daytime caregiver and her recent mobility issues due to a fracture. The couple's younger son and daughter-in-law discovered the severely injured woman on the living room sofa upon returning home and immediately alerted authorities. Emergency services found the woman unresponsive and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Prosecutors have requested his detention, citing the severity of the crime and the need for further investigation. Victim support services have been notified to assist the family. The court has approved the detention of the elderly man, who faces charges of homicide under domestic violence statutes.
