Taiwan braces for severe weather, high temperatures ahead of summer heat

Taiwan's southwestern regions are forecast to experience severe weather conditions from Saturday through Monday, with a risk of thunderstorms, strong winds, and sudden heavy rainfall. The Central Weather Administration has issued a yellow alert for high temperatures in Taitung County, anticipating potential foehn winds and temperatures exceeding 36 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologist Wu Der-rong explained that a stationary front is expected to shift slightly southward, bringing an unstable "southwest monsoon." This weather pattern will primarily affect the windward southwestern areas, increasing the likelihood of severe weather. Other regions may also experience similar conditions. Daily temperatures are projected to range from 22-31°C in the north, 23-32°C in central and southern Taiwan, and 23-34°C in the east.

From Wednesday to Thursday, the stationary front is predicted to move northward again. While daytime temperatures may rise when it's not raining, Wednesday will still be influenced by the southwest monsoon, leading to increased rainfall and afternoon convection. Thursday is expected to see a weakening of the monsoon and convection.

Starting Friday and continuing through next Tuesday, the Pacific high-pressure system is forecast to strengthen, bringing clear skies and hot, summer-like weather across the island. Localized afternoon showers are possible in mountainous areas. Additionally, a tropical disturbance is expected to develop east of the Philippines starting Friday. While current models suggest little chance of it impacting Taiwan, its development requires continued monitoring.
