Taiwan braces for torrential downpours as heavy rain warning issued

Taiwan's Central Weather Administration has issued a heavy rain warning, anticipating intense rainfall in the southern parts of the island. A strong southwest monsoon, coupled with a low-pressure trough, is expected to bring localized torrential downpours, particularly to the mountainous regions of Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung.

The weather agency forecasts that these areas could experience "extremely heavy rain," a level indicating rainfall exceeding 200 millimeters within a 24-hour period. Other regions, including Pingtung county, Taitung county, the Hengchun Peninsula, and mountainous areas of Hualien county, are likely to see "heavy rain" or "very heavy rain." Additionally, parts of Changhua, Yunlin, Chiayi, and Hualien counties, along with mountainous areas in Taichung and Nantou, are at risk of heavy showers. The agency also warned of potential heavy rain along the northern coast and on islands like Green Island and Orchid Island.

Authorities are urging caution due to the persistent rainfall. Residents in mountainous areas are strongly advised to be vigilant for potential landslides, falling rocks, and debris flows, and to avoid any activities in these zones. The risk of rivers overflowing their banks is also high. Furthermore, low-lying areas are susceptible to flooding, and preparedness measures are recommended.

The warning highlights the significant weather system affecting Taiwan, emphasizing the need for public awareness and safety precautions as the heavy rainfall is expected to continue.
