Taiwan Childcare Center Workers Face Negligent Homicide Probe After Infant's Death

A three-month-old baby boy died tragically after becoming unresponsive during a nap at a childcare center in Pingtung, Taiwan, on August 5. The infant was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on August 8, three days after the incident and just before his scheduled four-month check-up and traditional 'shouxi' ceremony.

Tomorrow was supposed to be the day our child turned four months old and we would have the 'shouxi' ceremony, but we never expected such a tragedy to happen.

The Pingtung District Prosecutors Office has named three childcare workers as defendants in a negligent homicide investigation. The baby's family, accompanied by their lawyer, released a statement expressing deep sorrow and frustration. They claimed that at no point did the involved staff offer an apology or explanation immediately following the incident, and that access to the initial surveillance footage was restricted, forcing them to consent to a judicial autopsy.

Prior to the family's statement, several staff members from the childcare center visited the baby's wake to offer their apologies. The family, though heartbroken, requested their presence at the public funeral. They recounted that due to only seeing the latter part of the surveillance footage, they were unaware of the baby's condition after feeding, specifically whether he was burped, if he was placed on his stomach or side while sleeping, or if his breathing was obstructed.

Because we only saw the latter part of the surveillance footage, we don't know the baby's condition after drinking milk, such as whether he was burped, whether he was put to sleep on his stomach, on his side, or if his blanket covered his mouth and nose.

One childcare worker reportedly admitted that the baby was placed on his stomach to sleep because he was crying. The family hopes the judicial investigation will uncover the truth and bring clarity to the circumstances surrounding their son's death. The case highlights concerns about infant safety and care standards in childcare facilities.
