Taiwan Declares Drought-Induced Nectar Scarcity a Natural Disaster, Offers Beekeeping Subsidies

Taiwan's Ministry of Agriculture has officially recognized 'nectar scarcity' resulting from continuous drought as a natural disaster, making beekeepers eligible for government subsidies. This marks a rare instance where the ministry has invoked disaster relief measures for the beekeeping sector, acknowledging the severe impact of the dry spell on honey production.

Beekeepers who have experienced losses of 20% or more due to the lack of nectar sources can apply for cash relief. The subsidy amounts to NT$550 per bee colony. The application period in Kaohsiung City runs from today until August 13th. This initiative aims to mitigate the financial hardship faced by the industry, which has seen a significant decline in honey yields.

Although fruit trees like lychee and longan bloomed earlier this year, the persistent drought led to a situation where flowers produced little to no nectar. The Ministry of Agriculture invoked the 'Agricultural Natural Disaster Relief Regulations' to address the crisis. To streamline the process, farmers who have already registered their beekeeping activities will have their records serve as objective proof, allowing district offices to grant relief without on-site inspections.

Eligible beekeepers must have completed the declaration and registration of their beekeeping activities and submit their applications by August 13th. Required documents include a national ID card, bankbook, and proof of registration. The relief aims to help the industry recover from the adverse effects of the drought and ensure its sustainability.
