Taiwan Fortifies Penghu Islands as Key Defense Against Potential Chinese Invasion

The Penghu Islands, a scattered archipelago of roughly 90 islands and islets situated about 50 kilometers west of Taiwan's main island, are emerging as a critical frontline in Taiwan's defense strategy against a potential Chinese invasion. Reuters reports that Taiwan has been intensifying its military preparations in this strategically vital location.

Given their position in the middle of the Taiwan Strait, the Penghu Islands present a significant obstacle for any large-scale Chinese military operation aimed at reaching Taiwan's main island. Taiwan's military has been conducting joint exercises, simulating enemy landings and practicing rapid troop and firepower deployment to counter such threats.

Local defenses have been significantly upgraded with the deployment of long-range weapons, including the Hsiung Feng-3 anti-ship missile. These systems are intended to threaten any Chinese naval forces attempting an amphibious assault, forcing Beijing to consider the risks posed by the Penghu garrison. Additionally, drone deployments are increasing for surveillance and operational purposes.

Taiwan's strategy extends beyond merely repelling an invasion once it reaches the islands. The long-range weapons and drones stationed in Penghu may also be used to monitor Chinese troop build-ups and potentially strike invasion fleets or assembly points, thereby disrupting and delaying an assault. Recent Han Kuang military exercises in Penghu have focused on live-fire drills and anti-landing capabilities, underscoring the islands' role as a key component of Taiwan's integrated defense system.

Beyond military hardware, civilian defense training is also being emphasized, with Penghu residents participating in logistics, first aid, and emergency response drills. As tensions in the Taiwan Strait remain high, Taiwan is committed to enhancing Penghu's resilience and defensive capabilities to withstand potential conflict.
