Taiwan Hospital Appeals for Blood Donations Amid Critical Shortage, Offers Cat-Themed Gifts

Changhua Christian Hospital is issuing an urgent appeal for blood donations, highlighting a severe shortage in its blood bank, with A and O blood types being most critically affected. The hospital is organizing a blood donation event on August 31 at its main campus to address the alarming deficit.

This call for donations follows President Lai Ching-te's recent public appeal for citizens to donate blood. Hospital Superintendent Chen Mu-kuan emphasized the critical need, urging residents of Changhua to participate and support the hospital's medical capacity. The hospital aims to bolster its blood supply to meet ongoing patient demands.

Summer months typically experience a decline in blood donations due to the absence of school group drives, coupled with hot weather conditions. However, the demand for blood in clinical settings, including major surgeries, trauma cases, and cancer treatments, does not decrease. Crucial blood products like cryoprecipitate, rich in clotting factors, are essential for saving patients with severe hemorrhage, postpartum bleeding, and those undergoing major operations.

To incentivize donations, the hospital is offering a choice of a limited-edition "White Rotten Cat" collaboration shoulder bag or an extension cord to individuals who donate blood on August 31. The event is scheduled to run from 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM in front of the hospital's outpatient building.

The hospital reminds potential donors that they must be between 16 and 65 years old, weigh over 45 kilograms, have had adequate sleep the night before, and not donate on an empty stomach. Those who have recently taken medication for a cold or received vaccinations are advised to postpone their donation until they have fully recovered.
