Taiwan loses 10-inning thriller, misses out on 5th straight Little League title

Taiwan's quest for a fifth consecutive championship in the Little League Baseball World Series (JLBWS) for the 13-14 age group ended in a heartbreaking 3-6 loss to the U.S. West representative, California's La Mirada, after a grueling 10-inning battle. Taoyuan Xinming Junior High School, the Taiwanese champions, fought valiantly but ultimately fell short of extending their dominant streak.

The championship game was a tense affair from the start. Taiwan's starting pitcher Ma Tien-en delivered a strong performance early on, and the team showed resilience, managing to tie the game three times. However, the decisive blow came in the top of the 10th inning when the U.S. West team launched a three-run home run, putting them in a commanding position from which Taiwan could not recover.

Both teams showcased exceptional skill and determination. Taiwan's offense had opportunities, capitalizing on walks and errors, and executing successful plays like stolen bases and bunts. However, they were repeatedly thwarted by strong pitching and impressive defensive plays from the U.S. West team, particularly from their starting pitcher Adam Brewer. Taiwan's defense also made crucial plays, including a spectacular catch of a potential home run by center fielder Chao Tzu-en in the seventh inning.

The game entered the "tie-breaker" format in the eighth inning, with runners placed on second and third base to start each half-inning. Despite further attempts to score and defensive adjustments, including a pitching change for Taiwan, the U.S. West team's late offensive surge proved insurmountable. Taiwan's final at-bat in the 10th inning saw them unable to score, sealing their fate as runners-up.
