Taiwan Man Fined $12,300 for Falsely Reporting Fire to Vent Frustration

A man in Yilan, Taiwan, has been ordered to pay a fine of NT$400,000 (approximately $12,300 USD) for making a false fire report to the emergency services. The individual, identified by his surname Lin, admitted to deliberately calling the 119 emergency hotline to falsely claim a fire had broken out at his landlord's residence.

Lin's actions were reportedly motivated by his dissatisfaction with being asked to vacate the rental property. He confessed that he made the false report as a way to vent his emotions. In addition to the fire report, Lin also anonymously contacted the fire department claiming an elderly person had fallen at the same address and required urgent medical attention.

The judge considered the evidence and determined that Lin deliberately made false calls for disaster and rescue services, rather than misreporting due to medication.

Investigators determined that Lin, who resided on Yong'ai Road in Su'ao Township, had intentionally reported a fire on Su'bin Road, Section 2, in the same township. Despite his defense that he might have been disoriented due to medication, the court found his repeated and specific reporting of the incorrect address, after being questioned by emergency responders, indicated a deliberate act rather than an accidental misstatement.

The court found Lin guilty of knowingly disseminating false information related to disaster prevention and rescue efforts, a violation of Article 53, Paragraph 2 of the Disaster Prevention Law. The ruling stated that his actions were not a result of medication but a conscious effort to cause disruption. The fine is subject to appeal.

Lin later admitted that he was dissatisfied with the landlord, Mr. Yang, who was trying to force him to move out without explicitly stating it. He felt some fear and called to vent his emotions.
