Taiwan Man Indicted for Firing 29 Shots in Public Over Dispute

A 31-year-old man in Taoyuan, Taiwan, faces charges for firing 29 rounds from a modified submachine gun in a public area following a dispute. The Taoyuan District Prosecutor's Office has indicted the man, surnamed Wu, for violating the Gun Control Act.

According to the investigation, Wu obtained a modified submachine gun and 29 live rounds from an acquaintance. He then allegedly had an unwitting associate drive him to a location frequented by an individual known as "Fat Dog," with whom Wu claimed to have a conflict. Upon arrival, Wu reportedly opened fire, discharging all 29 rounds at a building and nearby vehicles.

After the shooting, Wu fled the scene but proceeded to the Tong'an Police Station in Taoyuan, where he surrendered himself and the firearm around 2:03 PM on the same day. The incident occurred on November 14th of the previous year.

Prosecutors noted that while Wu surrendered voluntarily and handed over the weapon, his actions, firing a gun in a public place, demonstrated extreme disregard for law and order and severely disrupted public safety. Consequently, the prosecution has requested the court not to grant any leniency in sentencing, citing the egregious nature of the crime.
