Taiwan military drills: Fiber optic cable repair exercise tests battlefield communication resilience

Taiwan's Third Theater Command conducted a critical field exercise simulating the rapid repair of damaged fiber optic cables during the ongoing Han Kuang 42 military drills. The exercise, held in the Taoyuan area on Saturday evening, tested the communication and information units' ability to restore vital links following simulated enemy attacks.

During the drill, communication lines were intentionally disrupted to mimic damage caused by enemy combined firepower. Soldiers from the communication and information units were quickly dispatched to locate the fault, using equipment like optical time-domain reflectometers to pinpoint breaks in the fiber optic cables. They then employed fusion splicers to reconnect the lines.

Following the repair, thorough testing was conducted to verify the quality of the restored lines and ensure communication links were functioning normally. This process was crucial for the continuous transmission of battlefield intelligence and command orders, highlighting the importance of resilient communication networks in modern warfare.

The Third Theater Command emphasized that stable communication links are fundamental for maintaining command and control and ensuring troop coordination during combat operations. The exercise specifically validated the soldiers' professional skills in fiber optic testing, splicing, and fault troubleshooting, enhancing the rapid recovery capabilities of the communication systems and bolstering command resilience on the battlefield.
