Taiwan mother convicted for drug use around children

A shocking case has emerged in Tainan, Taiwan, where a mother is accused of allowing adults to use drugs in the presence of her five young children, resulting in dangerously high drug concentrations detected in two of the girls. The mother, who is unmarried and pregnant with her sixth child, allegedly provided drugs to two couples who were helping care for her daughters.

Court documents reveal that between March and May 2023, the adults repeatedly used drugs in the same confined space as a 1-year-old and a newborn infant. The mother herself participated in the drug use in her friends' rooms, disregarding the severe harm caused by secondhand smoke to the infants. The situation came to light in May 2023 when a social worker, tracking the infant, discovered the egregious neglect, leading to the children's immediate relocation.

Medical tests on the two girls revealed alarming levels of illicit substances. The older girl had methamphetamine levels of 2919 pg/mg and amphetamine at 62 pg/mg, exhibiting developmental delays. The younger infant's hair tested positive for high concentrations of ketamine, methamphetamine, and other drugs. The court found the defendants guilty of "endangering child development," with sentences ranging from nine to ten months imprisonment for some, while the mother and another defendant await separate judgments.

Disturbingly, the mother reportedly continued her drug use around her infant son after his birth in April 2025, leading to positive drug tests for the baby as well. She has been sentenced to 10 months in prison for domestic violence and endangering child development in relation to this incident. She is currently pregnant with her sixth child.
